László Weisz was born in 1895 in a small village called Bácsborsód situated in Southern Hungary. The father left his family with financial difficulties and moved away from home. Moholy's mother, Karolina Stern asked the support of the family's relative, the lawyer Gusztáv Nagy. Uncle Guszti took care of the education of the young Moholy.
After returning home from the war, he studied in the National Royal Hungarian School of Applied Arts, which was the legal predecessor of the Moholy-Nagy University of Design. During his years in Budapest he met photographer Erzsébet Landau, who introduced Moholy to photography.
Moholy became friends with Lajos Kassák, the most important Hungarian representative of international avant-garde trends, the editor-in-chief of the literary and art magazine called Ma.
Including many others in 1919 he signed the manifesto called Revolutionaries! which collected the aspirations of artists who supported the communist revolution. Due to political reasons he left the country with the Kassák.

During the World War I Moholy-Nagy served in the army of the Dual Monarchy. He documented the horrors of the war with colorful drawings which he sent home to his family as postcards.
